The usual routine for a trained dolphin revolves around performing several predetermined tricks after which the visitors reward these trained dolphins with fish as a treat, a thing to which these dolphins have accustomed to while residing in the aquarium pool. The exhibition of skill displayed by these trained dolphins perhaps does not truly reflect the effort and deep human-dolphin relationship that ensues.
At the center of any successful training of the dolphin lies in the effort made by the human trainer in trying to observe closely the behaviors of the dolphin and then make a determined effort in trying to establish a relationship with the animal. Some of the techniques used by trainers include building a bridge whereby whenever the dolphin performs the desired action it is positively reinforced into the mindset of the dolphin. Recall is another tool used by trainers whereby dolphins are guided and reminded of their safe position. In order to grab the complete attention of the dolphin the trainer uses a technique called stationing.
Similarly there are many methods in which these dolphins may be trained which include Opportunistic Training, Successive Approximations, Targeting, and Direct Manipulation. It comes across as one of Mother Nature's greatest marvels when one observes this rather brilliant display of obedience and comfort that these creatures are able to associate themselves by linking and bonding directly to their human trainers. This practice is now becoming common globally. |
