Obviously, they have no idea that wild dolphins never prefer dead and frozen fish. They eat those fish just because there is no living alternative.
In certain countries state laws specifically discourage against the unauthorized feeding of dolphins for lots of reasons which include the fact that uncontrolled feeding may make the dolphins sick as they become vulnerable to disease or injury. Dolphins might also face problems in maintaining their health if the daily requirement of fish for a dolphin is not met. Moreover dolphins that hunt for fish may become trapped in a fishing line or hooked on gear which will lead to disastrous results. Certain dolphins may accept fish that is far from being fresh or healthy and hence rotten causing the dolphins to become sick.
A fact that is often ignored is that uncontrolled feeding to the dolphins can decrease the ability of these special creatures to take care for themselves and their offspring. When dolphins become scavengers instead of hunters for their food it can severely disrupt fishing activities along with disrupting the ecosystem, cause frustration and anger to fishermen whose source of income becomes threatened.
Along the same lines are certain common guidelines given to those people who enjoy fishing and they observe a dolphin passing they are always advised to briefly pull in the fishing lines until the time the dolphin passes away. But if the dolphin is begging for fish, the interaction should be enjoyed but the dolphin must not be fed. More importantly contact with the dolphin should be avoided completely. Discard bait or fish scraps should not be thrown into the water near the dolphins. |
