Dolphin Favorite Food

Dolphins utilize all their spare time searching for food. They have the ability of using sonar called echolocation, which helps them in searching for food. Their favorite food is fishes, tuna, squids, shrimps and other crustaceans. Their echolocation effect tends to stun their food allowing them to catch it rapidly.

But it is mostly preferred that food of a particular species should be fed depending on its physiological feeding apparatus, the ecology of the area in which it is located (water temperature, terrain, depth), and the feeding behaviors practiced by that group .

Dolphins do not chew, rather swallow their food. In fact, they swallow it using muscles at the back of their tongue and throat to squeeze the salt water out and the fish down, also the head goes in first so that their inner throats are not scratched. The adults eat up to 4 to 5% of their body weight whereas a pregnant female eats up to 8%.

The dolphins are very clever, since they prey for food in groups. They are aware that because the fishes scatter everywhere, so the hunt cooperatively and keep revisiting various feeding grounds on a periodic basis. Their unity also helps them to scan for food in a vast area increasing the probability to find plenty of food. The dolphins can also be helping hand for the fishermen to catch fishes. They direct the fishes by stunning them with their echolocation, towards the nets of the fishermen.
